The achievements of Wasit University according to the sustainable development goals for the period (2021-2023)

The first goal is the eradication of poverty: conducting research and studies to address poverty, actively contributing to the distribution of the food basket to the poor people of Wasit Governorate, reducing and exempting study fees for poor students to reduce the effects of poverty on education, holding training courses for the University outputs to help them in the future obtain work opportunities, coordination with the Holy Shrine of Al-Hussainiya threshold in providing material support to the poor, equipping the orphanage of Wasit Governorate with cooling and heating equipment and furniture, covering the streets in the poor neighborhoods with sand-gravel layer, providing job opportunities for approximately 245 external lecturers of both sexes.

Eradication of hunger and food security: conducting many research and studies on the development of plant and animal production, cultivating 150 dunums of wheat and barley crops, cultivating 5 greenhouses with vegetable crops and strawberry. Adopting a program aims to empower women with the nutritional status of children. In addition to this, establishing 25 volunteer works by the volunteer teams with the contribution of students and faculty members from the university on health, food, and development of agricultural production.

Good health and well-being: providing free medical services to approximately 450 patients annually in the University consulting clinics, carrying out health awareness campaigns in schools, cooperating with the Wasit Health Department to provide medical services to the community, donating sterilizers and sterilization devices to support the Wasit Health Department, holding blood donation campaigns to supplement the Bank Blood and fulfill patients’ need, completing two programs in combating drugs, three programs in combating smoking, and six programs in the field of awareness of cancer diseases.

Quality education: Providing educational services in 60 academic majors in various scientific and humanities disciplines at the undergraduate level, and attracting postgraduate students to approximately 263 male and female students annually.

-Originating graduate studies, diplomas, masters and doctorates for the year 2022 with modern specializations that can keep pace with the labor market in eleven programs.

-Modernizing classrooms and providing them with display screens and smart boards, increasing the number of sports halls to keep pace with the development in education, creating an artificial intelligence laboratory and developing advanced scientific units in cybersecurity, the Internet of things, the software unit, electronic systems, and the tissue cutting unit.

-Attracting lecturers from local, Arab and international universities to lecture in development courses, seminars and workshops to develop students’ skills and capabilities on one hand and refine knowledge on the other.

-Attracting foreign students to study at Wasit University for the year 2023 through scholarships in various disciplines.

-Holding a lot of international conferences for the year 2021-2022 at Wasit University, which numbered 15 international conferences, contributed to raising the number of scientific research published in the discreet global scientific databases.

-Paying attention to scientific journals, which reached eleven in number until 2022 in various scientific disciplines.

-Interest in discreet scientific research, as the number of research published in the Scopus databases reached 1541 articles, in addition to publishing in well-reputable international scientific, Arabic, and other local journals.

-Establishing scientific debates between our students and other students studying in other local, Arabic, and international universities.

-Developing scientific titles at the university through central promotions, as within two years ( ) were promoted in various scientific and human disciplines ranging from professor, assistant professor to lecturer.

Gender Equality: Providing quality education for male and female students. The university has adopted the establishment of educational programs to achieve gender equality, providing job opportunities for both sexes by allowing them to give lectures as an external lecturer, granting female leadership positions at the university which numbered 35 females working in University and its formations.

Clean water and sanitary hygiene: presenting scientific studies in protecting water from pollution, preparing two integrated studies for the Dalmaj and the Shuwicha marshes, holding 13 seminars on preservation of water from pollution.

Clean energy: Preparing a clean energy guide to spread the culture of clean energy and rationalizing energy consumption, adopting solar cells in the production of electric energy, holding 18 courses, seminars and awareness workshops on the importance of energy rationalization and the use of clean energy.

Decent work and economic growth: Providing decent job opportunities through developing the capabilities of individuals in cooperation with employment agencies, setting up development courses that contribute to developing the capabilities of individuals to obtain job opportunities and reduce unemployment.

Industry, innovation and infrastructure: providing internet services in all university offices and presenting an integrated study for the Wasit Health Department on managing a smart hospital. Also, the university recorded 18 patents and inventions in 2022.

Reducing inequalities: The University has presented 32 scientific symposiums and 25 workshops in women’s rights and the necessary needs for eliminating discrimination between the sexes.

Sustainable Cities and Communities: Introducing a master’s degree in the College of Engineering as part of a sustainable engineering construction program, in addition to the studies provided by the Department of Civil Engineering and Human Studies in the field of urban sustainability and protection.

-Cooperating with Wasit Governorate to establish a large, giant bridge project linking the city of Al-Hay and Al-Nasiriyah Road, as well as Al-Hay and Saeed Ibn Jubair. The university also provides, through other advisory offices, its services to the governorate, including economic feasibility studies and environmental studies. There are joint committees with the governorate to provide services to the governorate.

-The university held an exhibition of Wasit heritage with the aim of introducing the heritage of Wasit and its importance.

-The university has also prepared an integrated study to raise the antiquities of Wasit on the international list, with the aim of protecting and preserving the antiquities.

-In 2022, the university contributed to the planting of 3,000 perennial trees in the university gardens and 500 perennial trees in the schools of the city of Kut.

Establishing partnerships to achieve goals: Making agreements with universities to achieve cooperation, exchange experiences and knowledge, and develop capacities. At the local, regional, and global levels, our university made agreements with the corresponding Iraqi universities, and many neighboring and global countries. The last of which resulted in our participation with Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom for the period 10-12 May attending an international exhibition and symposium on preserving the heritage of the city of Mosul after ISIS, as part of the international grant funded by:

As a result of international cooperation between British universities and Iraqi universities, including the University of Wasit, in the research project:

‘Preserving the Disappearing Cultural Heritage of Post-War Mosul’

Preserving the hidden cultural heritage in the post-war city of Mosul, where this project is implemented by the University of Nottingham Trent in cooperation with the Universities of Wasit and Mosul from Iraq and the University of Leeds from the United Kingdom.
