Under the guidance of the President of Wasit University, Professor Dr. Abbas Fadhel Al-Aqabi, and with direct support from the Dean of the College of Science, Dr. Faiq Jameel, the Department of Geology organized a scientific field visit to the Zurbadiya Highlands, located in the eastern part of Wasit Governorate. The visit was supervised by the Head of the Department, Professor Dr. Sattar Ubaid Mayous, and conducted in cooperation with the Iraqi Geological Survey Authority.

This visit comes as part of the university’s efforts to achieve the fourth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which emphasizes ensuring inclusive and quality education for all. The main objective was to train fourth-stage students in essential field geological survey skills. The visit included practical exercises in reading topographic and geological maps, using the geological compass, determining directions and slopes, studying surface geological structures, and collecting rock samples for laboratory analysis.

The activity is part of the department’s annual plan to enhance students’ practical skills, link theoretical knowledge with field application, and prepare them for the labor market in fields such as geological exploration, natural resources, and geotechnical engineering.

Participants from the Iraqi Geological Survey Authority praised the organization and active participation of the students, emphasizing the importance of such field visits in preparing a qualified generation of geologists who can contribute to the country’s sustainable development.
