Active Participation in the 5th Baghdad International Water Conference in Support of Sustainable Development Goals
The President of Wasit University, Professor Dr. Abbas Lafta Al-Aqabi, and the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Assistant Professor Dr. Hakim Sultan Al-Rikabi, participated in the 5th Baghdad International Water Conference, held under the patronage of the Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, and organized by the Ministry of Water Resources under the theme: “Water and Technology… A Partnership for Development.”
This participation comes as part of the university’s ongoing commitment to promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation—through discussions on innovative technological solutions for water resource management, advancements in irrigation systems, and addressing the pressing challenges of water scarcity and climate change.
The conference witnessed broad participation from Arab and foreign countries, alongside governmental and non-governmental figures, experts, and researchers in water-related fields. It also hosted the 11th Meeting on Precision Irrigation of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID).
In his opening speech, the Prime Minister emphasized that water issues are not merely a service sector concern, but a national imperative with profound implications across all areas of life. He called for unified national efforts and clear accountability to safeguard this vital resource through innovation and technology-driven solutions.
The conference aims to:
Discuss critical issues related to precision irrigation and the application of modern technologies in water resource management.
Encourage scientific research and innovation in water technologies.
Foster knowledge exchange and build strategic partnerships that contribute to sustainable water development.
Through these objectives, the conference directly supports several Sustainable Development Goals, including:
SDG 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
SDG 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
The conference represents a vital platform for aligning national water strategies with global sustainability agendas and advancing integrated and innovative solutions to ensure water security for future generations.
