Wasit University Launches Campus-Wide Cleanup Campaign to Expand Green Spaces — Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals
Under the direction of University President Prof. Dr. Abbas Lafta Al-Uqabi and the supervision of the Administrative Vice President Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Shihab Ahmed, Wasit University’s Department of Administrative Affairs organized a large-scale cleanup campaign targeting several areas within and around the university campus.
This initiative is part of the university’s broader strategy to enhance environmental awareness, expand green spaces, and foster a culture of volunteerism among students and staff. The campaign aligns closely with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly:
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities — by promoting clean, green, and inclusive educational spaces;
SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 15: Life on Land — through tree planting and restoration of green areas;
SDG 4: Quality Education — by integrating environmental values into campus life;
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals — by coordinating efforts with various community and institutional stakeholders.
University President Prof. Dr. Al-Uqabi emphasized that the campaign is part of a comprehensive plan to plant trees and vegetation across the campus, aiming to create a healthy and sustainable learning environment. He also noted that this effort will be followed by further greening initiatives, including reforestation and garden rehabilitation projects in collaboration with relevant partners.
Wasit University reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable campus development.
