The College of Engineering at Wasit University organized an educational dialogue seminar focused on promoting awareness about the dangers of sectarianism. The event was attended by the University President, Prof. Dr. Abbas Lafta Al-Aqabi; the Vice President for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Dr. Sabeih Lafta Farhan; the Vice President for Administrative Affairs; the Dean of the College; and a number of faculty members and staff.

The seminar opened with a speech by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Thaer Saud Salman, who emphasized the importance of unity and rejecting sectarianism within both academic and societal contexts.

The seminar featured lectures by Mr. Ali Mahmoud Mukhleef, Head of the Legal Committee in the Wasit Provincial Council, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdul-Zaid Al-Shammari from the College of Law. The speakers explained the concept of sectarianism, its origins, and its impact on Iraq. They also highlighted efforts to promote a culture of peaceful coexistence and social harmony, along with future aspirations to reduce sectarian divides.

Notably, Prof. Dr. Sabeih Lafta Al-Zubaidi commented during the seminar, stating that Iraq’s constitution adopts a decentralized system, which transferred authority from the central government to local provincial governments. However, he noted that practical implementation remains challenging and will require time for democratic processes to mature and result in responsive central and local governments.

On the sidelines of the seminar, a silent theatrical performance was presented by children from Al-Rabee Kindergarten, addressing the theme of terrorism and its harmful effects on society.

This seminar contributes directly to the advancement of Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
By fostering dialogue, raising awareness, and promoting values of unity and peaceful coexistence, the event supports efforts to build inclusive societies, reduce violence, and strengthen the foundations of justice and effective governance in Iraq.
