College of Science at Wasit University Launches “Million Trees” Campaign to Promote Environmental Awareness and Student Well-being
Under the patronage of the President of Wasit University, Prof. Dr. Abbas Lafta Al-Aqabi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Faiq Jamil Al-Miyahi, the University Psychological Guidance Unit in the College of Science, in cooperation with the University Psychological Guidance Division and the academic departments, launched the “Million Trees” campaign to plant and green the college gardens, with active participation from the students of the College of Science.
The campaign aims to:
Enhance environmental awareness among students regarding the importance of tree planting and its role in improving mental health and the campus environment.
Support national initiatives aimed at increasing green spaces in alignment with the Million Trees campaign.
Develop a spirit of teamwork and volunteerism among students and strengthen their sense of social responsibility.
Improve the aesthetic landscape of the college gardens and create a healthy and motivating academic environment.
Integrate psychological guidance with environmental issues, highlighting the positive impact of green spaces on reducing stress and enhancing well-being.
Strengthen cooperation between the University Psychological Guidance Unit, the guidance division, and academic departments in implementing purposeful initiatives.
The campaign aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by enhancing students’ mental health through access to green spaces.
SDG 4: Quality Education, by providing a sustainable and motivating learning environment.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by increasing green spaces within the university campus.
SDG 15: Life on Land, by planting trees and supporting biodiversity within the campus environment.
Recommendations:
Continue conducting periodic tree-planting campaigns within the campus and across other colleges.
Engage the largest possible number of students to cultivate a culture of environmental stewardship.
Establish awareness programs linking mental health with green environments.
Ensure proper care of the planted trees to maintain their sustainability and achieve the long-term goals of the campaign.
Support these initiatives by the College Dean and University Administration, providing the necessary resources for success.
Document environmental activities in the media to enhance the university’s image as an institution supporting sustainable development.
