Wasit University College of Engineering Visits Al-Wafaa Elderly Care Home to Promote Community Responsibility in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals

As part of enhancing the humanitarian and societal role of academic institutions, the College of Engineering at Wasit University organized a field visit to Al-Wafaa Elderly Care Home in Wasit Governorate. The visit was led by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Thaer Al-Ghsham, with the participation of a group of faculty members, under the framework of the Women’s Affairs Unit activities.

The initiative reflects the College’s commitment to social responsibility and its effort to instill values of solidarity, compassion, and care for the elderly, acknowledging their lifelong contributions to society. Moreover, such community-oriented initiatives contribute to the university’s international standing and global rankings by demonstrating its societal impact and commitment to sustainable partnerships.

During the visit, the college delegation met with the home’s administration to discuss possible support, including volunteer initiatives, advisory and service support, and organizing activities to improve the quality of care provided to residents. The visit also included a tour of the facility, during which the delegation interacted with several elderly residents, engaged in friendly conversations, and reviewed their health and living conditions, fostering an environment of respect and well-being.

This initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by supporting the physical and mental well-being of elderly residents.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, by assisting vulnerable groups and ensuring equitable access to care services.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, by promoting social cohesion and community participation.

SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (indirectly), by reinforcing ethical values, solidarity, and social responsibility, which enhance the university’s academic and societal reputation.

At the conclusion of the visit, the Dean of the College expressed appreciation for the efforts of the staff at Al-Wafaa Home and reaffirmed the College’s commitment to supporting humanitarian and community activities that reflect the university’s mission in serving society and promoting values of responsibility, solidarity, and engagement with all segments of the community.
