Under the patronage of the President of Wasit University, Prof. Dr. Abbas Al-Aqabi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Dentistry, Asst. Prof. Dr. Hani Mohsen Khalif, the Women’s Affairs Unit at the College of Dentistry held a workshop entitled “Psychological and Social Empowerment of Women and Its Role in Confronting Domestic Violence.” The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Umayma Abdul Karim.
Psychological and social empowerment of women is considered one of the most important pillars in addressing domestic violence, as it aims to enhance women’s self-confidence, awareness of their rights, and their ability to make decisions and protect themselves and their children. A psychologically empowered woman is more capable of rejecting abuse, expressing her feelings, and seeking help without fear or guilt.
Social empowerment contributes to integrating women effectively into society through education, employment, and the establishment of social and legal support networks, thereby reducing isolation and dependency on the abuser. It also enhances women’s access to supporting institutions and specialized services, and equips them with tools for peaceful and legal response. The combination of psychological and social empowerment not only protects women from domestic violence but also contributes to building a more balanced family and a more just society based on mutual respect and rejection of all forms of violence.
