The President of Wasit University, Prof. Abbas Lafta Al-Aqabi, together with the Dean of the College of Agriculture, Asst. Prof. Hakim Sultan Abd AL- Rekabi, participated in the Wasit Provincial Council session dedicated to discussing the draft law on Afforestation and Protection of Green Spaces.
During the session, Prof. Al-Aqabi emphasized the vital role of universities as key partners in providing scientific solutions to address pressing environmental challenges, including desertification, drought, and rising temperatures. He underscored the importance of adopting this legislation to safeguard the environment, protect public health, and advance sustainable development goals.
He also called for active engagement of academic institutions, civil society, and volunteer groups in the initiative “Afforestation in Wasit: A National and Ethical Duty”, which aims to expand green coverage and raise public awareness about the significance of environmental stewardship.
This initiative reflects Wasit Governorate’s strategic vision to become a national leader in environmental protection and climate change mitigation, while strengthening the University of Wasit’s commitment to sustainability and alignment with international ranking standards.
